POOR old Saint George. Unlike his 'Mr Popularity' brother Saint Patrick, he's lucky if he gets a mumbled 'cheers' on his special day, never mind an all-day drinkathon and a green-hued procession through the city centre.

He's an engaging, entertaining teacher, so if you're a wine novice and want to expand your knowledge, this event is an excellent place to start

Celebrating St George isn't a 'thing' for most of us but Sam's Chop House is putting that right. They're hosting a quintessentially English St George's Day Dinner on 21 April in their quintessentially English tavern. And it looks like it'll be a lot of fun.

It's a food and wine matching night hosted by Manchester's most famous sommelier (St) George Bergier. George has been plying Mancunians with fine wines for 48 years, after taking his first job as a wine waiter at the Midland Hotel in 1968. He's an engaging, entertaining teacher, so if you're a wine novice and want to expand your knowledge, this event is an excellent place to start.

George will introduce each of the four, first-class English wines he's selected to complement each course, including a stunning Pinot Gris from Foxhole Vineyard in Sussex, and a sparkling glass of Nyetimber.

The food is what the Chop House chefs do best – traditional, home-grown dishes with a modern twist. Pork and black pudding with quails egg. Posh fish and chips. Traditional beef Wellington with spring vegetables, Marmite potatoes and a beef jus. And sticky toffee pudding to finish.

It's all the favourites of English cooking, done to absolute Chop House perfection. And at £49 a ticket, including four courses and four wines, it's good value too.
