SIMON Schama, historian and TV presenter, will launch his new book, The Story of the Jews: Finding the Words (1000BCE – 1492) at Manchester Jewish Museum in September.
Well known for his entertaining style of writing and delivery, Simon Schama brings to life the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people
This will be the first volume of Schama’s definitive new history of the Jewish people and accompanies a landmark five-part primetime BBC series, written and presented by Schama this autumn.
Schama’s book and TV series will tell the story of the Jewish people across the centuries and across continents.
The blurb says: 'This is a vivid account of a people. In times of peace and prosperity a Jewish kingdom thrived in the Arabian mountains and in Syria there were synagogues adorned with radiant wall paintings. In times of tragedy the Talmud were burned in the streets of Paris and massed gibbets hung over the streets of mediaeval London . It is an affirmation of life against the steepest of odds.'
Schama’s second volume, The Story of the Jews: When Words Fail, 1492 – present day will be published later this year.
Max Dunbar of Manchester Jewish Museum says: “Well known for his entertaining style of writing and delivery, Simon Schama brings to life the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people for everyone to understand. We feel privileged to be holding the launch here at MJM where our aim is always to inform the wider public about Jewish culture, faith and history
