I'M one of those girls who is blessed – or should I say, cursed – with curly hair.

And with curly hair comes inevitable frizz. I spend hours coiffing my hair into Kate Middleton-esque curls (well as close to her royal mane as possible) only to step outside and have all my hair work destroyed by Mother Nature. Yes, I’m talking about you rain, wind and humidity.

So when I heard about Peter Regan’s new frizz-fighting treatment, I was eager to try it out. At my wits' end with trying to achieve red carpet-worthy hair, I needed something to tame my tresses once and for all.

Peter, who owns the salon on Deansgate, has developed ‘StyleSmooth’ which uses brand new technology to smooth hair and control frizz for up to six months. Could this be my new best friend?

With the party season fast-approaching and the winter weather playing havoc with my locks, I was excited to experiment with this new wonder-product. And the best news? This can be achieved without exposing your hair to harsh chemicals. It also has a built in 220 degree heat protector so your hair can look good but remain in a healthy condition.

StyleSmooth sets out to fill in any gaps in the chemical bonds of the hair with Keratin protein. When hair is styled with heat these bonds are pulled out of their natural shape to achieve a smooth finish, but can revert back to their original form following contact with moisture or humidity. Something I’m very familiar with. The bonds can't return to their original shape because the space has been filled – ensuring a smooth and frizz-free look is retained.

I informed Peter I have to dedicate a large part of my evenings to washing, blow dring and styling my unruly hair (I think my record has been nearly three hours). Therefore, I was pleased when he stressed how the product aims to limit the time you have to spend getting arms like Arnie from trying to tease your reluctant hair into a smooth and sleek style.

Would I be limited to having straight lifeless hair now though? As much as I complain about my ginger ball of frizz (I’ve been likened to Mufasa from the Lion King before, hardly the biggest of compliments), I didn’t want to lose the curl completely. But Peter assured me the product targets reducing frizz rather than simply acting as a straightener. Phew. So whether you want big barrel curls or a loose more relaxed wave, this can be achieved and look effortless at the same time.

And this product is designed to make it easier to create a salon finish at home too.

After the initial application in Peter’s salon, I was given the rest of the bottle to take home to use as a weekly maintenance top-up, in replacement of a usual conditioner.

Each time the treatment is applied, the hair’s Keratin levels are increased, consequently meaning hair gets easier to manager and the results are still apparent after several washes. I was impressed that due to the consistency and high concentration of the product, a little goes a long way - a revelation for my thick head of hair.

Having been prone to tight ringlets or as my mum affectionately refers to them, ‘kiss curls’ close to my ears and nape of my neck, the ultimate test would be to see how these would react to the product.

Peter dampened one of the curls and then dried it and to my delight, the frizz had vanished. StyleSmooth 1 – Frizzy hair 0. Even after the first application, my hair seemed to be significantly less voluminous and there wasn’t a kink in sight. Well, I never thought I’d see the day.

I would definitely recommend StyleSmooth. Successful tests have been carried out on a range of different hair types so it’s definitely not just aimed at us frizzy-haired ladies. But I’m happy that finally, this product has been proof that my hair can handle extreme weather conditions and I will be able to have straight hair for the festive parties – even if we get snow.

Update:

So a week on, and after the usual torrential rain we’ve had here in the North, I am surprised to say, my hair is looking much more frizz-free. Ok, so I’ve reverted back to my curly self, but after using StyleSmooth for a second time, the results are still evident and I can style my hair however I so wish without it being so stubborn.
