MANCHESTER is swimming in beer.

The Gasworks Brewbar will feature its own six barrel brewery and team of on-site brewers

Not only do we boast the UK's most fecund craft beer scene, but we also enjoy a wealth of beer gatherings, brew taps and, most importantly, boozers.

Such is the punter’s newfound interest in the process of brewing that a clutch of Greater Manchester establishments have begun to establish in-house microbreweries.

The Clarence in Bury – winner of the Manchester Food & Drink Festival ‘Dining Pub of The Year 2015’ – have been doing this to great effect since 2014 with their Silver Street brewery, whilst newly proposed Ancoats restaurant, Goose Fat & Wild Garlic, announced plans earlier this year to operate a new brewery, Fundamentum, alongside the kitchen on Cutting Room Square.

Now the team behind The Dockyard - the hugely popular industrial-chic alehouses found in MediaCityUK and Spinningfields – have fleshed out plans first revealed by Sleuth in February to establish a microbrewery within their third site in First Street.

The Gasworks Brewbar – located on the former Gaythorn Gaswork site now known as First Street – will feature its own six barrel brewery and team of on-site brewers tasked with cooking up the ale as you chuck down yours.

Owner Steve Pilling, the man also behind Damson, Guilty by Association and Liquorice bar, said: “With our passion for the raw ingredient and the knowledge and understanding of beer that we’ve built up since opening our first Dockyard, it really felt like a natural progression to start brewing our own.

“When I viewed the First Street site a year ago and started to understand the scope of the development, I knew we had found the right spot to create something unique and as yet unseen in Manchester.”

In addition to their own brews, Pilling ensures they’ll continue to champion local brewers such as Shindigger and Brightside, alongside the likes of Brewdog, Goose Island and Left Hand.

The Gasworks Brewbar will open in August.
