We pig out at the Northern Quarter joint

FINGER-LICKING food comes to the all-new menu at The Blue Pig, from dirty burgers and fries to pick-and-mix small plates perfect for sticky mitts – in a good way, of course.

The Blue Pig by name, so The Blue Pig by nature, and of course there’s plenty on here for the meat-eater – but there’s also lots to choose from if you have a flexitarian, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free diet.

We couldn’t leave without giving the Dirty Pig Burger a go – and, boy, we’re glad we did – it’s seriously good!

We kicked off with some small plates, which are great as a starter or for sharing, tapas style, and you can choose any three for £13. We went for authentically American bourbon-braised beans, chilli pork lollipops with hints of heat thanks to sriracha mayo, and vegan fiery bean popcorn – a bit like sweetcorn fritters – with nicely contrasting cool guacamole.

Next up, we tried the super-crispy halloumi, marinated in Arabic chermoulah paste, and served with roasted field mushrooms and wild rocket pesto – tasty and health conscious too, being vegetarian and gluten free.

The pan-seared sustainable hake fillet was fresh and light, and with mini beetroot bhajis, saag aloo potatoes and sharp-tasting pickled cauliflower, it’s a well put-together dish.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without giving the Dirty Pig Burger a go – and, boy, we’re glad we did – it’s seriously good! The spicy pork pattie – from The Butcher’s Quarter round the corner – is topped with succulent beer-braised pulled pork and flavourful maple-glazed smoked bacon, plus Monterey Jack cheese, tomato and chilli chutney, and baby gem, beef tomato and red onion. Dirty, maybe; delicious, definitely.
