OFFICIAL figures verified and released by the Depart for Transport (DfT) show a significant drop in overall road accidents in the region.
"There is still work to be done: in my view, any casualty is one too many."
Results from 2012 to 2013 show that road fatalities have dropped by more than a quarter and that the total number of casualties on Great Manchester roads has fallen by ten percent:
Road fatalities - 49 in 2012, 35 in 2013 (-28.6%)
Serious injury - 649 in 2012, 621 in 2013 (-4.3%)
Slight injury – 5360 in 2012, 4788 in 2013 (-10.7%)
Total casualties – 6058 in 2012, 5444 in 2013 (-10.1%)
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), working in partnership with Greater Manchester Police, ten local authorities and several public bodies as part of The Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership (Drivesafe) is targeting the reduction of road casualties as a key priority.

Dr Jon Lamonte, Chief Executive of TfGM, said: “The reduction in the number of people involved in collisions on Greater Manchester’s roads is fantastic news, but there is still work to be done: in my view, any casualty is one too many.
“So we will continue to be vigilant by working with local authorities and key partners to keep everyone on our roads safe, to ensure that this positive trend continues.”
