Major New Hotel For MCR: Indigo With Marco Pierre White

A NEW hotel featuring an Italian American fusion restaurant by Marco Pierre White is to be built on Corporation Street in the city centre. This is a plan that has been on hold for a couple of years.

The hotel is proposed for the landmark site at the back of Urbis and next to Victoria Station. The building itself is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1834 according to the developer. It was one of Manchester’s first commercial office buildings built for multiple lettings rather than for one particular company.

Indigo Hotel and Marco’s Manchester is to offer four star accommodation for £90 a night and looks set to benefit from the surrounding area's annual footfall of 6.6 million. The hotel will also feature six premium suites available on the top floor amongst 187 rooms across the building.

The circular shaped tower will be 13 storeys high and the building will feature triangular shaped rooms. Think large Dairylea cheese triangles filled with distinctive and individual furniture. The architects are 3DReid, the fine folk who designed the nearby One Angel Square.

According to Mike Hitchmough of 3DReid the design refers to the location. "Across the road is Balloon Street where James Sadler made Manchester's first balloon ascent in the 1780s. The actual location was from a garden next to the site of the hotel. The circular shape of the balloon inspired the design."

Investment is still being sought for the new venture by the InterContinental Hotels group but construction is guaranteed to begin in the first quarter of 2014. Hotel development company Sanguine Hospitality Ltd is working alongside Investment Fund Managers Tritax and Bespoke Capital Management LLP to secure investment and proceed with plans for the new hotel and restaurant.

“Outside of London, Manchester is the most buoyant hotel market in the UK, with both a strong business and leisure market," said Nick Taplin, managing director of Sanguine Hospitality. "This will be a very successful hotel in a prime central location. Investment opportunities of this kind are few and far between in Manchester.”
