THOSE lunatics from Beat Street, Manchester's self-proclaimed 'Pop-Up Kings', are at it again...
It's pretty much the only sport we can participate in... while having a beer
"We looked at our schedule and saw a two week gap," explains Beat Street founder Chris Legh, "there's really only one thing we wanted to do...
...Crazy Golf"
Having packed over 75,000 people into 76 food raves across Manchester over the past sixteen months, Beat Street co-conspirators, Legh, Lyndon 'Liar's Club' Higginson and Bart 'Hula' Murphy, were all set to go on their next BIG project; six 'micro-diners'; two new bars and a Caribbean jerk shack within Deansgate's Great Northern complex.
However, after the usual planning wrangles, the project hit the buffers... at least until 2016.
So they did what any person of sound mind and sufficient imagination might, they began collecting mountains of junk in order to build Manchester city centre's first ever crazy golf park - Junkyard Golf Club.
"We've had a passion for crazy golf for years," says Murphy, "we've played in London, Miami, even a crazy UV techno place in Berlin.
"So when we found the time and space to bring it to Great Northern, there was no going back..."
"Plus we're all out of shape," chips in Higginson, "so it's pretty much the only sport we can participate in... while having a beer."
Junkyard Golf Club - opening from 24 November to 6 December - will see nine'ish ("maybe twelve, depending how much crap we have left") crazy golf holes constructed within Unit 5 of Great Northern using everything from knackered old treadmills to Scalextric and paddling pools...
"Basically anything we could Steptoe," says Legh.
So who's going to build it?
"We are," says Higginson, defiantly, "with the help of our crackpot handyman."
"Plus Lyndon has a degree in fine art," says Murphy, "so that should come in handy..."
"He did pull that off the internet though," says Legh.
So there you have it, the Junkyard Golf Club will open from 11am every day with a fully stocked bar, music and DJs. Tickets are priced at £6 per person and can be played in pairs or groups of four, six and eight.
Can they pull it off? We wouldn't bet against 'em, plus, Lyndon does have a Fine Art degree...
Junkyard Golf Club (+18) runs from 24 Nov to 6 Dec at Unit 5, Great Northern Warehouse, 235 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4EN
