ON Friday there's a magical mystery tour concerning John Dee – alchemist and friend of Queen Elizabeth 1, His birthday was 13 July, 1527, 488 years ago, so it seems appropriate.

Dee was one of the most fascinating figures in British history. He’s known as a scientist, mathematician and philosopher and close acquaintance of the key Elizabethans of the age. However he's probably better known as an astrologer, alchemist and occultist.

Dee lived for several years in Manchester and his official residence and offices still exist at Chetham’s School and Library.

On the tour people will learn about this incredible character, his life, his times, and even see some of the books from his famous library signed and annotated by the man himself, in the equally gorgeous Chetham's Library.

So there are two good bits to this tour, the personality of Dee himself explored in the city streets around Chetham's, and then an opportunity to visit the most atmospheric space in the North West.

Confidential editor Jonathan Schofield will be leading the tour.

1pm, Friday 13 July. Tour lasts around an hour. Meet outside Chetham’s School of Music and Library, Long Millgate, between The National Football Museum and Victoria Station, M3 1SB
