The Manchester small plates restaurant has been recognised by the prestigious food guide

Twenty restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland have been awarded Bib Gourmands in the Michelin Guide this year.

Amongst them is Manchester haunt Higher Ground, known for serving exceptional small plates created from some of the finest produce of the North West.

Founded by a trio of friends who also run Flawd, Higher Ground opened its doors in February 2023 and, in less than a year, has been recognised by Michelin for its efforts.

Led by Joseph Otway, the team behind Higher Ground includes Daniel Craig Martin and Richard Cossins, who also run the Cinderwood Market Garden in Cheshire where lots of the fresh produce is sourced.

With its relaxed bistro style, the Faulkner Street restaurant has room for 50 covers and offers sharing menus at affordable prices, with set menus of five to six courses costing around just £45.

The announcement was made ahead of next week's awarding of the new starred restaurants, set to take place at Manchester's Midland Hotel on 5 February.

What is a Bib Gourmand award?

The Bib Gourmand (named after Bibendum) award was created in 1997. It recognises restaurants that display 'good quality, good value cooking'.

Up until last year, the award only recognised venues serving three courses for £30 or under. However, Michelin has since told The Caterer the award reflected a "balanced price-performance ratio" and there is no longer a "concrete price limit".
