Wood & Company: high-end cocktails in a hidden gem destination
JOIN us on a new mission as we head beneath the streets to seek out one of Manchester’s most secret, not-so-secret bars. Hidden in plain sight, Wood & Company is tucked away behind closed doors. A red sign in the shadows reads: “Goods entrance – keep clear.” It’s a warning, but it’s also a welcome. “Delivery trucks: engines off please.” If you know, you know.
The gang have opened the November and December diary and are busy taking bookings
We know. Head to South King Street between Manchester’s Deansgate and Cross Street. Make sure you’re not being followed. Hop up four steps, push open the frosted “Goods Entrance” door, note the stark striplighting then take the tiled staircase to the basement. These are all on your checklist; don’t look back. Downstairs, you’ll discover a hidden gem: a classy, cosy, candlelit space complete with super-long marble bar, luxe leather banquettes, lots of dark corners and top-notch staff to serve you craft beers, great wine and fizz, and Wood & Co’s famous high-end cocktails.
The drinks menu changes regularly, so there’s always something new for you to try. Right now, Summer Harvest combines Cognac with raspberries and the Garden of Eden teams citrus flavours and elderflower with gin. Bananarama has a whisky and bitters banoffee-inspired hit; Melonade is our favourite kind of anagram, putting melon liqueur with sherry and vodka tonic. They also serve the classics – from Bramble to Old Fashioned, Cosmopolitan to Margarita – and into the wee small hours too (until 3am on Friday and Saturday).
Open Wednesday through Sunday, the speakeasy-style space of Wood & Company is great for get-togethers, made for meetings and perfect for private parties or to hire for special events. It’s the go-to once you’ve finished late-night shopping, for an after-dinner drink or two, or as your prime target. This is a mission we’re on, after all.
