SALFORD has got a brand new square. And it's close enough to the city centre for Manchester folk to adopt it too. Greengate Square is the redeveloped space over the footbridge by Manchester Cathedral.
With an events space, bubbling fountains, and ambient lighting, it's the perfect place to take a breather from the city. The views take in the River Irwell and the Manchester skyline, and the square itself forms part of the new Irwell River Park. Go there to relax and get a bite to eat and a coffee. Or check out the square's regular events and markets .
The monthly urban market at Greengate Square is described as 'Borough Market comes to Salford.' Stalls include gourmet food, crafts, art, and handmade, artisan goods. With musicians and performances as well, it makes for lively trip out. The markets take place on the last weekend of every month. Get Greengate Square market dates.
Events-wise, Greengate Square has already hosted elements of Dig the City and Colour of Salford (part of Pride). Coming up they've got The Manchester Weekender on 12 and 13 October. On Saturday 12 October, you can help propel their cycle-powered cinema, which will show a classic film on the outdoor screen. On Sunday 13 October, world record-holding BMX trickster Matti Hemmings will turn Greengate Square into a work of art as he creates a Pollock-esque masterpiece using his tyres as paintbrushes. He’ll also teach budding BMXers a few tricks.
More events are planned, including a programme of family-friendly Christmas activities throughout December. Details will be announced soon.
If you've not been to Greengate Square yet, go and explore. It is located at the corner of Chapel Street and Victoria Bridge Street. For a map and more info, visit our Greengate Square page.
