THE GREATER Manchester Police Headquarters on Central Park, Northampton Road, Newton Heath was named as one of the best workplaces in the country at the British Council for Offices’ (BCO) annual National Awards in London last week. The new purpose built development was recognised as the ‘Best Corporate Workplace’ in the UK.
The use of open space has a positive impact on both the workforce and visitors
The architects were Aedas.
The headquarters brings together a range of new and existing policing functions within a single building, and is flexible enough to accommodate both current and future divisional requirements in the context of changing shift patterns and on-going strategic departmental changes.
The building manages to accommodate these fluctuations and maintain the high need for security, while remaining very welcoming to the wider public. The centrepiece of the building is a light filled atrium that fully communicates the ‘open policing’ ethos.
David Partridge, Joint Chief Executive of Argent and BCO Awards Chairman, commented: “Despite a continuing recession and cuts to public expenditure, this building has made its working areas highly collaborative and effective, demonstrating Greater Manchester Police Force’s dedication to its staff. The use of open space has a positive impact on both the workforce and visitors, and the exterior manages to balance being highly robust, yet inviting.”
