MANCHESTER-based Gaydio has taken over operation of the two digital radio licences (on London and Sussex Coast multiplexes) formerly operated by QSoft as Gaydar Radio. The enlarged broadcast area and inherited audience makes it the largest gay radio station in the world.

“Taking over these licences is a terrific opportunity for us. Gaydar had a large and loyal audience and we’re working hard to deliver a service that people will love.”

Chris Holliday and Emma Goswell (‘Chris and Emma at Breakfast’) were the first voices on the newly expanded service, which now identifies as ‘Gaydio, the Beat of Gay UK’.

Programme Director of Gaydio, Toby Whitehouse said, “Taking over these licences is a terrific opportunity for us. Gaydar had a large and loyal audience and we’re working hard to deliver a service that people will love.”

The new digital licences share most of the programming of the established Manchester station (88.4FM), but some separate specialist music and magazine programmes will continue to be broadcast to Manchester only, as part of Gaydio’s community licence.

The former GaydarRadio licences reach 750,000 listeners per month (RAJAR/IPSOS MORI) through the DAB licences, mobile apps and online sites. Gaydio’s original licence in Manchester estimates 100,000 listeners per month.

Gaydio is based at Manchester One on Portland Street, and has been broadcasting full-time since Summer 2010. Gaydio can also be heard online at gaydio.co.uk; via apps on the Android and iOS platforms; and through through the Gaydar and Gaydargirls websites.
