RIC FRANKLAND really has no time to stand around right now as he has just two weeks to finish his mini eco building on Wilmslow Road, Rusholme,  before a grand opening at the end of the month.

It makes you concentrate on looking for ways to design out the flaws in the construction process, to streamline things and make it more efficient. This is a prototype building, it was intended to be a learning process to speed delivery in the future

His self-imposed deadline (after about a two year build time) is to tie in with the launch of Manchester Carbon Literacy in the morning of the 30 October in Manchester Arndale.

Ric’s dwelle-ing will then be one of the first centres for Carbon Literacy in the country when it opens fully next year.

It will be part showroom/part classroom as it endeavours to show how we can live more efficiently and make less impact on the planet.

In the meantime he has to finish off the interior and is waiting for the kitchen to be fitted next week and the shelving to be put up. He is cutting it fine with the sofa being delivered on the 29th.

Ric said: “As an architect you are involved in the bigger picture of a project but here I am having to deal with the nitty gritty of every day detail and its quite tough.

His decisions and the dwelle-ings performance are now being monitored by Liverpool University’s Centre for Eco Innovation which will track its impact and efficiency for the next three years after the EU put up some research money.

It will be useful for visitors/developers/interested self-builders/forward thinking councils and Eastlands Housing which are backing the project to have some scientific data.

This clever little building will not be open to the general public until the New Year but Confidential readers who are interested in learning more can get a special tour from Ric.
