POLICE have just released an image (below) of an unknown man and dog that fatally attacked another small dog in Spinningfields.
“This poor dog was mauled to death in front of both the owner and shocked onlookers. I have absolutely no doubt that anyone who saw this would have been horrified and, no doubt, the image would have stayed with them.”
On May 6 2013, at around 4.45pm, Daisy (above), an 18-month old toy Yorkshire Terrier was mauled to death by an as yet unknown Akita-type breed just outside of the Alchemist outdoor terrace.
AlchemistStephanie Hopwood, 24 from Sandbach, was out enjoying a bank holiday afternoon with Daisy, who was on a lead, when she was suddenly attacked by another much larger dog, who was not on a lead. Daisy sustained fatal injuries during the attack and later had to be put to sleep by vets.
The Japanese Akita breed is well known to have an inherently aggressive temperament and thus, according to akitarescue.com, should ‘not be allowed to run free or roam at will.’ A natural hunter, Akita’s will often view small animals, including small dogs as prey.
After the attack, the unknown owner put his dog back on its lead and hurriedly walked off passing Manchester Crown Court towards Bridge Street.
PC Gavin Johnson said, “This poor dog was mauled to death in front of both the owner and shocked onlookers. I have absolutely no doubt that anyone who saw this would have been horrified and, no doubt, the image would have stayed with them.”
“We have now taken the decision to release this image as we want the public’s help to identify this man and his dog.”
