MANCHESTER’S most offbeat pizza joint lived up to it name earlier this month, when it hosted a pizza box auction in aid of The Christie, one of Europe’s largest cancer treatment centres. If proof were needed that being unconventional can trump the norm, £400 was raised - and Lyndon Higginson, Crazy Pedro’s founder, also raised a good few laughs as ‘honorary auctioneer’.

Watch out for the next one and get a pizza the action

Much like the venue’s existing artwork, the pizza box selection was eclectic: spanning everything from a signature Mancsy bee design to a Tony Wilson-inspired Stewy to a bumper box stuffed with £150 worth of kindly donated goodies. Sprinkled here and there were a couple of comical duds, which were nevertheless snapped up by philanthropic bidders as they enjoyed slices of Pedro’s famously flavoursome pizza.

Higginson, clad in a bright yellow Crazy Pedro’s t-shirt emblazoned with two men in pyjamas, was fantastic at warming up the crowd. After introducing one young artist whose pizza box was for sale, he proceeded to auction each cardboard creation with the aid of jokes aplenty and his trusty (slightly incongruous) loudspeaker.

In all, it was an enjoyable and entertaining evening - made all the more worthwhile by the vital charity at its heart. Since it’s all set to become a regular occurrence, watch out for the next one coming soon and get a pizza the action.
