CORRIDOR MANCHESTER is hosting an exhibition of proposals that aim to improve the public realm in two areas of Oxford Road.

The area between the Contact Theatre and Whitworth Park is a confusing tangle of pedestrian and cycling routes which put people into conflict situations a number of times in a short distance

The new schemes have been designed by students from Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester School of Architecture, in partnership with professional architecture and landscape practices.

The teams were asked to consider approaches that might be possible to transform two gateways to Oxford Road; the area under the Mancunian Way flyover and the area between the Contact Theatre and Whitworth Park.

While the Mancunian Way is not a physical barrier to the continuity of the pedestrian corridor, the flyover gives the impression of being the ‘edge’ or perimeter of the city. This implies to visitors that there is little worth exploring past this barrier. In improving the appearance of the underpass visitors are more likely to want to explore further.

The area between the Contact Theatre and Whitworth Park is a confusing tangle of pedestrian and cycling routes which put people into conflict situations a number of times in a short distance. The Contact Theatre and Whitworth Art Gallery are important cultural assets but entry to them is discouraged by physical barriers and poor announcement.

While final decisions on the public realm scheme to be implemented rests with Transport for Greater Manchester and the various landowners, Corridor Manchester invites members of the public to give feedback on all the proposals at the following times:

Monday 28 May (noon–5pm)
Tuesday 29 May (10am–6pm)
Wednesday 30 May (10am–3pm)
Thursday 31 May (10am–3pm)
Friday 1 June (10am–3pm)
Wednesday 6th June (10am–3pm)
Thursday 7th June (10am – 3pm)
Friday 8th June (10am – 3pm)

The exhibition is taking place in the Foyer of the Manchester Technology Centre (Oxford House), Oxford Road, Manchester, M1 7ED.Corridor Manchester is a partnership between Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Manchester and the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The promoters encouraged proposals that are possible in the current economic climate, while still feeling like a radical transformation.
