Glum news from Walkden as Confidential hears one of the region’s best restaurants, Grenache, has shut down.

This particular neighbourhood could not sustain this smart neighbourhood restaurant

The ‘heartbroken’ chef patron, Mike Jennings, a former protégé of Nigel Haworth and Gary Rhodes, announced the news via social media:

“We need to share some very sad news with you all… unfortunately we closed the doors at Grenache for the last time on Sunday.

“We have outgrown the building and it is impossible for us to continue our concept there without some serious investment into the kitchen.”

Jennings (pictured) recently hit the national headlines in March for defending an autistic member of staff when a (deeply unpleasant) group of customers asked not to be served by him.

Jennings asked that the group not return to Grenache. 'You do not deserve our time, effort or RESPECT!' he wrote.

But Grenache, despite a talented chef, excellent food, warm staff, a core of regulars, two AA Rosettes, an entry in the Michelin Guide and the Good Food Guide, has finally fallen victim to its location.

With no disrespect to Walkden, this particular neighbourhood could not sustain this smart neighbourhood restaurant. Should Grenache have been in Prestwich, Chorlton, Heaton Moor, or Didsbury, it may have been a different story.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, in what’s becoming an increasingly brand-dominated ‘premium casual’ city, the loss of Jennings and co is a hefty blow.

Confidential wishes them well.
