AN EIGHTEENTH century Cheshire country pub has been named the best in the UK at a prestigious trade awards.

The award completes a bumper year for Church Inn owners

The team behind The Church Inn in leafy Mobberley collected the award from national food critic Jay Rayner during an awards ceremony at BAFTA London.

Having beaten off the local competition to win their regional North West final, the Church topped 94 pubs from across the UK to take the coveted ‘National Pub of the Year 2016’.

A spokesperson for the pub said: ‘We don’t profess to being perfect all the time, but we try really hard and care so much about trying to be perfect every time. That’s our constant goal, to please our guests.’

The award completes a bumper year for Church Inn owners Tim Bird and Mary McLaughlin, who recently scooped gongs at both the Hilden Awards and the Eat, Drink, Sleep awards.
