CÔTE Brasserie has been a breath of fresh air since it opened in Manchester. With its striped awning and muted grey colour scheme, Côte recreates the quintessential French brasserie, like something out of a black and white Robert Doisneau photograph or an idyllic holiday in a small French town.
Côte Brasserie errs on the side of class rather than cheese. The only fromage here is on the menu, and excellent it is too, particularly the Reblochon
However, it is an updated version of the traditional neighbourhood brasserie. Less shabby and sleeker but retaining all the ambience of a proper French eaterie – like the one in Chinon's main square where I whiled away many a happy afternoon. Unlike another nearby brasserie chain I could name, Côte Brasserie errs on the side of class rather than cheese. The only fromage here is on the menu, and excellent it is too, particularly the reblochon.
There are lots of places to eat in Manchester, many of them fantastic, but what has really been missing from the food scene is somewhere you can take the whole family without having to take out a second mortgage, yet also be assured of good food, with a range of dishes that everyone can enjoy.
What has really been missing from the food scene
To make the most of seasonal produce, Côte Brasserie's menu changes fortnightly but you'll always find well-loved brasserie favourites like steak frites and tuna niçoise on the a la carte menu. You can taste the quality of the ingredients in dishes like the risotto vert whose asparagus and butter beans almost sing with summery freshness. As for the sauces, they're all made daily by the chefs – none of that bought-in muck, thank you.
Côte Brasserie is a relaxed sort of place. There are no snooty first and second sittings here. Just like a typical French neighbourhood brasserie, it's the sort of place you can drop in at any time with breakfasts, lunches, weekend brunches as well as pre- and post-theatre dining. In fact it's a place where you can sit down to a delicious plate of food at almost any time.
