THERE'S a new dog in town. And it's bald.

The bar will be Mezcal-heavy, with a robust selection of tequilas, margaritas, tropical fruits and dizzying sharers like the Zombita or the Tijuana Sangria - tequila mixed with red wine. Seems like a sound concoction.

The Black Dog on New Wakefield Street (just off Oxford Road) is to be shored up by a new Mexican cousin down in the basement.

XOLO, named after the Mexican Hairless Dog or Xoloitzcuintle (frequently voted the World's Ugliest Dog, but best at swimming) is a new Mexican tequila bar concept from the Black Dog Ballroom Group (Black Dog Ballroom, DogBowl, Cane & Grain, Liars Club).

Occupying the former Underdog club, beneath Black Dog NWS, the new 'tequila den' will be a late night venue with room for 400 people, around 800 feet.

Capitalizing on a surge of interest in the Mexican public holiday, the new space will employ a 'Day of the Dead' theme designed by Cheeky Tiki, the team behind the Liars Lounge in the newly opened Northern Quarter rum, ribs, bourbon and beer joint, Cane & Grain.

In order to coincide with the fruitful return of around 80,000 students to the city, the new bar launches on Monday 15 September, the opening day of Fresher's Week 2014.

Ross Mackenzie, Black Dog Group owner, said: “We like to keep our venues exciting and different, we wanted to create something new for this season’s fresh wave of students in our Black Dog Ballroom on New Wakefield Street.  Xolo, meaning the Mexican bald dog, is all about tequila, frozen margaritas and late night party tunes.”
