NO-ONE quite does after-work drinks like the Italians. They don’t really do quick discounted post-spreadsheet pints with colleagues at happy hour. What they have, is the much more stylish ‘aperitivo’, which is what they call the ritual of going out for pre-dinner drinks.

For Italians, Aperitivo is an opportunity to spend an enjoyable few hours, generally between 4pm- 7pm, relaxing after work over a glass of something cool and refreshing along with a few light snacks and a bit of people watching. They use the perfectly reasonable excuse that this is a great way to work up an appetite for dinner.
So where can Mancunians go to experience this late afternoon delight? San Carlo Fumo on St Peter’s Square of course, with their newly launched Aperitivo Menu which offers a two for one deal on house wine, Prosecco, Peroni beer and six signature cocktails: Aperol Spritz, Sloe & Sticky, Wild Hibiscus Mojito, The Bramble, Prosecco Hugo or an Elderbeer.

As you’d expect from any reputable bar serving aperitivo, all drinks are served with complimentary Italian bar snacks such as assorted pizza bites, bruschetta and arancini.
We’ve tried it and can guarantee aperitivo at San Carlo Fumo is one of the best (and most stylish) ways to unwind after work – and if you’re not ready to return home, you’ve always got an excuse to stay on and try some gorgeous dishes from their new summer menu.
Obviously the whole ‘appetite stimulating’ idea behind aperitivo really works, because we then went on to enjoy a gorgeous dish of tender charred octopus on skewers with crispy pancetta, tomato concasse, golden potatoes and basil dressing. We also sampled a fresh and summery Mediterranean fish carpaccio with a selection of lightly cured fish and seafood, chopped fresh vegetables and balsamic pearls.
Aperitivo is available 4pm-7pm, Sunday to Thursday, and offers a two for one deal on the following: house wine, Prosecco, Peroni beer and five signature cocktails. All will be served with complimentary Italian bar snacks which may include: assorted pizza bites, bruschetta and arancini (stuffed rice balls).
