ERAN Creevy was hailed as one of the UK film industry’s bright young things when he released his suburban crime drama Shifty in 2009.
The film was a huge critical success; it went on to earn a BAFTA nomination, five British Independent Film Award nominations, got a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and brought Creevy to the attention of legendary director Ridley Scott.
Starring Riz Ahmed and Daniel Mays and based on Creevy’s own experiences as a teenager, the film served as an antidote to the Guy Ritchie-inspired gangster films that had plagued UK cinema for years.
His fresh use of grimly authentic British scenery (vandalised tower blocks, foreboding overcast skies, estates strewn with crushed larger cans) is now a common sight on mainstream television. Even Rihanna adopted the imagery for her video 'We Found Love'.
Before Creevy’s career explodes next year when he releases his big-budget star-studded crime epic Welcome to the Punch he has agreed to host an exclusive screening of Shifty followed by a talk and Q&A for the Greater Manchester Film Festival.
It takes place at the Odeon Printworks at 1pm on Saturday 6 October. Tickets are £7 (£5). To find out who Creevy based the character Shifty on, and what it was like being mentored by Ridley Scott, book your tickets here.
