HOW many bars in Manchester have their very own vineyard in Sicily to supply their wine? Er, one. Veeno on Brazennose Street is ran by two ex-pat Italians whose family produce the award-winning wines at the Caruso & Minini vineyard near Marsala.
Like all the best Italian food, it's simple, fresh, and focuses on high quality ingredients
On a recent visit home, they decided it wasn't just the wine they wanted to bring back to Manchester but the whole culture of 'apertivo' – where drinks are enjoyed with delicious small plates in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere.
Their new menu is the result. It's a mouth-watering selection of authentic sputini (or small plates) served as platters or as individual dishes. It includes delights such as burrata (a mix between mozzarella and cream), salame pistacchio (salame flavoured with pistachio), carciofini (artichokes in oil), and primosale (sheep's milk cheese) and much more.
You can order one or two sputini as a snack with your drink, or a full platter for a more substantial meal. There are also salads such as the Siciliana (rocket, oranges, olives and walnuts) plus panini and piadini (flat bread) with traditional Italian fillings such as speck and asiago. A menu of sweet treats such as home-made tiramisu completes the food offering.
Like all the best Italian food, it's simple, fresh, and focuses on high quality ingredients. Go and try it from 3 July – it's the perfect accompaniment to Veeno's charming wines.
