WITH nothing off limits, and a £150 tab to burn through, your night at Hawksmoor will be one you remember for years.

Start in the inviting, twilight-toned bar with a 'pre-prandial' cocktail. These sharpeners are designed to whet the appetite for the feast to come. The Tom and Jerez gets our vote – it's a very quaffable citrusy gin drink with Manzanilla sherry.

Then it's into the restaurant itself where everything speaks of an easygoing luxury, from the worn leather seating to the glittering donut lights above. Don't skip the starters – they're some of the finest things we've tasted. Go for the garlicky soft scallops, or the simple but excellent smoked salmon and soda bread. Or the tender and luscious steak tartare.

Hawksmoor is famous for its steaks, which are sourced from the welfare-conscious Ginger Pig farm in North Yorkshire. You can buy them individually or as a 'big cut' by weight, and they're likely to be some of the finest you've ever tasted. The anchovy hollandaise will make a good accompaniment, alongside some of their dreamy triple-cooked chips.

Dessert-wise, we recommend the sticky toffee pudding. It gets every element spot on – the gorgeous, caramally sauce, the soft, springy pudding, and the slither of clotted cream melting on top.
