Masla-Dabba

AS anyone who cooks Indian food will know, you've got to have the right spices. And more than that, you've got to have them well organised and close to hand when it's time to add them to your pan. A masala dabba, aka an Indian spice storage set, is a great way of keeping them together but separate, and in fine condition.

This prize from ASM Grocery in Ashton-under-Lyne comes with a set of the most common spices used in Indian cooking: tumeric, chilli, coriander, cumin, garam masala, paprika and curry powder. These are 100g Rajah spices, and represent just a small selection of the wide range available at ASM.

Anyone who likes cooking Indian food should check this place out. It's a must-visit, specialist store that sells all the ingredients and utensils you could possibly need at low prices. The owners negotiate deals with the suppliers which they pass on to the customers, so you get your cupboards stocked for less.

Their range includes essentials such as rice and naan breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, pickles, spices, and ingredients used in Mexican, Chinese and Italian cooking.

And once you've explored ASM, make sure you refuel at Lily's next door. It's a vegetarian restaurant that's rapidly becoming known as a 'hidden gem' thanks to its authentic Indian street food and curry dishes.

It's been nominated for various awards, and had our reviewer drooling when she went last October. Read our Lily's review.
