DON GIOVANNIS on the edge of St Peter's Square doesn't just do fine Italian food – it also does an impressive line in fine wines.

Their Boutique Wine List features hand-selected wines, primarily from Italy, each one chosen for its fine, rare, or authentic qualities. They range from a Barolo Alfredo Prunotto 2007 from Piedmont at £43.50, to a Tignanello Marchesi Antinori 2008/09 from Tuscany at £71.50.

We like the sound of the Rosso del Conte Contea di Sclafani Pasca D’almerica (Nero d’Avola) 2006 from Contea di Sclafani at £52.95. It's described as 'an extremely complex, intense bouquet of wild berries, walnuts, cinnamon and tobacco leading to a richly concentrated, mouth-filling palate that combines thrilling old-vine depth with a certain deftness and elegance.' Imagine swirling that around your glass, then taking your first, eye-opening sip.

Don Giovannis first opened its doors in 1984. It's a stylish 150-seater space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Oxford Street, and a private dining room that can accommodate 50 people.

The food is a cut above. High-quality Italian cuisine ranging from pizzas and pastas to risottos and fillet steak. There's also a Chef's Choice menu containing a more eclectic range of Italian-inspired cuisine, while the Fish Specials menu includes dishes such as king scallops and lobster thermidor (the lobster is delivered fresh every day).

If you appreciate a good wine as much as you do good food, head here for a divine Italian lunch or dinner.
