AFTER much speculation Dandara has revealed a revised plan for the site it owns on Chapel Wharf in Salford, between The Lowry Hotel and The Edge.

And it’s big.

The plans are going to be of huge interest to anyone owning and living in Century Buildings, the back of which directly faces the site.

Almost 1,000 apartments in four buildings on a site that runs to the River Irwell and is currently being used as a surface car park. To compare Green Quarter has 1,300 units.

Ten years ago Dandara had plans for a 37 storey tower on the site along side three other buildings all around 17 storeys high.

The market downturn meant it never progressed but a planning consent still exists.

The new plans are by Axis Mason, who used to have an office in Manchester but don’t any more, and have done a lot of work on Jersey, where Dandara has a base.

The scheme is for four chunky looking blocks with ground floor commercial around courtyards that will be open to the public and 'walkways will be established to improve pedestrian links to the riverside and city centre.'

The plans are going to be of huge interest to anyone owning and living in Century Buildings, the back of which directly faces the site.

The reduced height will spare anyone living on the higher floors of The Edge but it’s still going to make a massive impact. A harsh lesson about buying next to a car park / building plot.

Martin Brown of Dandara said: “We believe our revised proposals for new apartments and commercial space will revitalise this site and play a major role in the on-going regeneration of the Chapel Street corridor and central Salford.”

Dandara’s development team will use feedback from the consultation to shape its proposal before a detailed planning application is submitted to Salford City Council later this year.

Dandara of course are responsible for Spectrum, one of the better designed and better maintained buildings in the city as well as The Lock Building on Whitworth Street which has a rather nice atrium.
