Watch Groundhog Day for a solid 24 hours

A MIDDLE aged man repeating the same day over and over again for the rest of eternity....

No people, not a precis of William Roach’s acting career but the unlikely hit storyline of Groundhog Day. 

It's lasted 23 years and it is set to last 24 hours more when Liverpool Small Cinema shows the cult classic 12 times, back to back, next month.

Ears will bleed to the sound of Sonny and Cher on a loop from 6am until 6am the next day as the Bill Murray comedy is shown continuously - although you only have to pay once.

The event, at the tiny Victoria Street kino will, of course, be held on Groundhog Day, February 2. Or as we over this side of The Pond know it: Candlemas or Imbolc.

The 1993 comedy from Harold Ramis, denotes the American tradition of asking the Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil when winter will end. Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during an assignment covering the annual event in, Pennsylvania, finds himself in a time loop, having the worst day of his life, over and over again.

Liverpool Small Cinema Programmer, Sam Meech, said: “It's a completely daft idea, but it somehow transforms a cinema screening into a heroic test of endurance for the audience. I was inspired by the double and triple bills at the Prince Charles and Cube cinemas, and this is simply the logical extension of that idea.”

“It's a unique opportunity for film lovers to be part of something extraordinary, and become legends in the process. Even if people just want to come along to for a double bill, or a single screening, seeing it actually on Groundhog Day is a perfect way to experience the film.”

We're also going to be having Sonny and Cher on loop in the cinema, and regular weather reports from the room to update the wider world on how our audience are holding up. Oh, and if anyone has a Groundhog, give me a shout.” 

Liverpool Small Cinema is a community-run, not for profit, 56-seat cinema inspired by the German Kino underground cinema movement. The cinema opened in March 2015 and has welcomed more than 3,000 people through its doors.
