Keen bakers are encouraged to join in and take part this November
Over £10,000-worth of prizes, including £1,000 cash awards for schools and community groups, are up for grabs at the inaugural Gingerbread House Festival, hosted in the Lake District’s picturesque town of Windermere.
Taking part at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa between 20-22 November, the first ever Gingerbread House Festival celebrates and reimagines the centuries-old culinary tradition with judges looking for all kinds of designs including traditional country cottages, global cultural landmarks, modes of transport and more.
“As autumn approaches and the nights draw in, it’s time to start thinking about designing your own ‘gingerbread house’ entry,” says Joanne Hunter, Co-Director of the famous Grasmere Gingerbread® and brainchild behind the event.
Ms Hunter said it was appropriate that the Gingerbread House Festival venue was just a few miles from the original Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, with the overall competition winner taking home the glory, a ‘Gingerbread House Trophy’ and £250 cash.
Other prizes for winners and runners-up include:
- £1000 cash awards, book vouchers and money towards food technology equipment to the best primary and secondary school entries;
- £1000 cash awards and VIP experiences with Grasmere Gingerbread® to the best under 18 and over 18 social, community and hobby groups;
- ‘Paddle & Stretch’ activity and afternoon tea at the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa for a student group;
- Guided paddle board and afternoon tea and ‘wellbeing’ experience at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa for businesses;
- Weekend for a family of 4 at the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa and family afternoon tea at The Wild Board Hotel for families;
- £200 voucher for Kids Cookery School and £100 Lego voucher for 4-11 year olds;
- £200 ‘Life:Style’ voucher and £100 voucher for Kids Cookery School for 12-18 year olds;
- Two nights B & B at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa for two people with ‘thermal journey’ and £200 voucher for English Lakes Hotels for adults.
Mark Needham, General Manager of Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, says: “The Gingerbread House Festival will bring together families, friends and visitors in the Lake District in a pre-Christmas gathering to celebrate exceptional British imagination, craftsmanship and creativity,” he said.
Gill Haigh, Managing Director of Cumbria Tourism, says: “I am already looking forward to school pupils, students and other bakers and crafters to use our inspirational landscape and scenery to create magical ‘gingerbread houses’ in the heart of Cumbria.”
The Gingerbread House Festival will raise money for Shelter, the national housing and homelessness charity.
