Where to take your ma out in Liverpool for Mother’s Day

BEFORE you all start, we know you shouldn’t need a designated day to show your mum what she means to you, and that you should be showing your love and eternal gratitude to her all year round. While I agree that’s certainly true and something we should all be aiming for, the reality of life is that we barely have time to do much besides basic self-care, so having a day put aside to celebrate our mums and our mum-like figures is always a good reminder.

For your mum or any other incredible woman in your life who deserves to be spoiled, then Mother’s Day is as good a day as any to take her out for food and drinks and treat her like the queen she is. (Bonus: you get to go too!)

Breakfast at East River

If your mum’s an early riser but still deserves a drink then the only solution is brunch and East River, the cool Allerton hangout inspired by Manhattan’s Lower East Side, does one of the best. Working with the aptly chosen Mother Gin they’ll be slinging out complimentary gin cocktails to each advance booking and be giving you the opportunity to find out more about the Liverpool-based distillery as you eat. Choose from a selection of brunch platters, bursting bagels and streetfood sides - the maple chicken bites are a staple whatever time of day it is.

Mam-and-me-ah! Camp and Furnace Mother’s Day Brunch

If you’re after a morning with a bit more flare, the ABBA-themed brunch at Camp and Furnace is bound to be just the ticket. With food provided by none other than Scandi cooking kings Skaus, you can forget the usual fry-up. Instead, you’ll be sipping on cocktail specials and an hour of bottomless Prosecco while working your way through a smorgasbord of Scandi classics like meatballs, smorrebread and hassleback spuds. Of course this’ll all be to a backdrop of ABBA mania, music and a whole lot of dancing. Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Oh Me Oh My Afternoon Tea

There’s nothing that says traditional Mother’s Day more than afternoon tea, so if that’s on the agenda it’s Water Street’s beautiful Oh Me Oh My that you want to be looking at. Their Bloomin’ Marvellous afternoon tea serves up a marriage of floral-themed décor, unlimited loose leaf tea and dainty delights. Live acoustic music and optional Champagne complete this one-of-a-kind Sunday session.

Lunch at The Art School

For some scran that is bound to impress even those with the most exacting of tastes, then opting for the set lunch at The Art School is one way to do it without entirely blowing your budget. Their Mother’s Day menu, specially curated by head chef patron Paul Askew, will run two sittings and includes the likes of smoked salmon and caviar, Wagyu steak, twice-baked cheese soufflé and Cox apple tarte Tatin.

Delifonseca Roast Dinner

For a mama who prefers home comforts to white tablecloths, it has to be a Sunday roast, and I reckon one of the best comes from Delifonseca’s newly refurbished dockside restaurant. Choose from four meats and a veggie option served with all the usual sides: roasties, gravy and seasonal veggies sourced straight from the deli. Their offering for Mothering Sunday includes the roast as one of three courses of beautifully presented deli delights priced at £35 a head.

Dinner and Drinks at Duke Street Market

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having different tastes to your parents and if you and your ma don’t see eye-to-eye on the food front, then Duke Street Market is the perfect place for dinner. Pick and mix from six high-quality vendors the likes of Finca, Ginger, Bone N Block and Indigo Greens. Just be careful - a great wine selection at the bar and a permanent buzzy atmosphere means you’ll come for one and end up staying for 10.

Sunday Roast at Frederiks

Shake up your Mother’s Day celebration — bring your mum to Frederiks for a beautiful roast dinner served with a side of disco and psychic bingo from Liverpool drag legend Lady Sian.

Their chefs have created a special three-course Sunday Roast menu for Mother’s Day. Enjoy it for just £24.95pp, including a Tanqueray Gin serve.

It will be served from midday to 7pm. Entertainment from 2pm and Psychic Bingo will start at 5.30pm.
