Just for you, a cultural route with plenty of ale thrown in
This Friday is LightNight and while you should never mix your drinks, you can definitely mix your drinks with art.
Light Night is a lot to take in. Some people would say too much, all in one go, on one night.
So if you're suffering from a cultural overload, head for the nearest boozer.
Start at Baltic Fleet. It’s 5pm and a place that does a bowl of scouse and a summer ale will set you up for the waterfront. You’ll also see an interactive work by Tristan Brady-Jacobs (HOBO) flickering in the windows. At 5.30 be at Merseyside Maritime Museum for Fanny & George’s Georgian Liverpool which is a poke around Georgian Liverpool teaching you about death, disease and the docks. The performance is 30 minutes and runs every hour until 8.30.
Head to Black Lodge Brewery where you’ll find a time machine taking you back to your fondest memory. You might also find a beer that takes you back to a fonder time as well, recently brewed ales include Thee Owls, End of Days IPA and This Machine. Sold in thirds they might be strong but you’ll walk it off.
Along Jamaica Street you’ll see the Soundtrack of Our Lives, hosted by Dorothy, Baltic Creative, with all its hands on kid friendly activity, but keep going. Artist Alex irving has created a candlelit labyrinth walk inside Northern Lights. Supported by LJMU Screen School it’s soundtracked by choral and meditative audio.
While you’re inside, pop your head around the door to see Xiringuito, the pop up restaurant who are creating a one off visual dimension to their Friday night menu, created by jack All productions. And while you’re there, book a table, it's going in a few weeks.
Head out of Cains and grab a pint at the Brewery Tap. Still no train station or regular bus at Baltic Triangle so either get your walking shoes on or grab the LightNight bus. It’s a free heritage circular using classic Liverpool buses running every ten minutes from 6pm until 11pm. The route serves the Pier Head, Albert Dock, Jamaica Street, The cathedrals, Lime Street and Dale Street.
A quick straightener at The Belvedere and you’ve got a choice of two cathedrals. Rotation Eighteen 269 sees new media artist Andy Mckeown reflect on the 18269 days since the Metropolitan Cathedral's consecration. Performances are at 7pm, 7.45 and 8.30pm. The final performance will be followed by ‘Reiteration’ a layered soundscape of voices and ambient sounds from the Cathedral. It starts at 9.10pm until 9.30pm.
If it’s dark, skip round the corner to Victoria Gallery & Museum for DROAR, a specially commissioned by John Higgins (Liverpool graphic novel artist) to be projected onto the building. Head back along Hope Street towards the Anglican Cathedral, stopping for a quick livener in The Pen Factory.
Alternatively, nip into John Foster Garden for a moment’s respite and Jonathan Raisin’s Where the Time Goes and a new sound piece. He’s also at the Phil performing ‘40 Times’, a specially composed piece celebrating 40 years of Roger Hill’s ‘Pure Musical Sensations’ at BBC Radio Merseyside. Special guest is Philip Jeck.
After a cheeky Plum Porter in The Caledonia worm your way to Blackburn House on your way to the Anglican.
There’s a pop up food market, Liverpool Scran, featuring some of the best food producers in the city, like cheese shops, jam makers, bakers, bagels, Homebaked Pies and more.
Sated, tip your hat at the Illumaphonium on your way into the Anglican for Super Sonic Assembly. It’s a giant vocal jam followed by a DJ set from Greg Wilson.
If it’s before 11 you’ve still got time to weave your way to St George’s Hall for the ceilidh and DUUOME 360 by Morestate Lab, a dome creating a sequence of sound and visuals that you can walk around inside.
Lasties at Doc Duncan’s and if you’re up to it there’s the AfterParty at Constellations. But you’ll have to jump in a cab for that.
Happy supping, tomorrow is Saturday!
