Japanese BBQ, Levantine kebabs and elusive sushi. It's all go at the GPO
Signed, sealed, delivered - the new GPO Liverpool food hall has finally opened its doors in Liverpool’s Metquarter. Claiming to be “the biggest food hall in the city,” the 11,000 square foot space features a new wave of independent food and drink traders from across the North West.
Please Mr Postman, look and see. When will Nama open for me?
GPO Liverpool pays homage to the building’s past as the General Post Office which was constructed in Victoria Street between 1894 and 1899. In its new guise as an indie food and drink hub, GPO will champion independent regional food talent, showcasing a wide variety of cuisine with a focus on high quality street food.
Entry is via the first floor of the MetQuarter next to The Everyman Cinema, so it’s ideal for a post-movie meal or a pit-stop for shoppers exploring the boutique stores downstairs. We stopped by last Saturday for lunch and were generally very impressed by the layout, facilities and range of food on offer.
The ordering and payment definitely needs some work though - on our visit, we couldn’t checkout and pay for food from different outlets at the same time, meaning that we had to put in three separate orders from Torito Taco, MorMor and GPO Bar. The app told us that the tacos would arrive in one hour; they actually arrived in about 15 minutes. Phew. All just teething problems, hopefully.
One of the biggest draws of the GPO is Tokyo izakaya-inspired kitchen Nama, but there's no sign of it just yet. Nama's Instagram teases sustainably-farmed bluefin tuna and marbled wagyu on its daily changing menu, with cocktails and sake to wash them down. We’re expecting great things from Jöro's Luke French and Stacey Sherwood-French, the husband and wife team who have been decorated with 3AA Rosettes and awarded a Good Food Guide score of 5.
Please Mr Postman, look and see. When will Nama open for me? We’ve asked the food hall staff and we’ve asked the PR company and so far the best answer seems to be early July. Watch this space.
In the meantime, here’s our pick of the GPO starting line-up.
Konjö
From the team behind critically acclaimed Sheffield restaurant Jöro, Konjö is a Japanese-Scandi mashup. The umlauts might drive you dotty but the skewers, snacks, and small plates all get straight to the point, with fire-fuelled flavour from a Japanese Konro BBQ grill.
Jailbird Nashville Fried Chicken
Loaded fries and great fried chicken, inspired by the owners’ travels across the US. With three levels of heat to choose from, chicken is served with just a hint of chilli, marinated in Carolina reaper, or clucking hot Nashville inspired spice.
Patty B’s Burgers
As Pat Butcher would say “You think Frank wants you - mutton dressed as lamb.” Patty B’s does not pretend to be anything other than the best dirty-loaded burgers in town. The menu includes Pat’s bacon and cheeseburger, spicy tater tots and the sloppy Joe. All absolute filth.
MorMor
MorMor serves up small plates inspired by the flavours and cultures of The Levant - a crossroads of western Asia, the eastern Mediterranean and northeast Africa. The brainchild of the Monypenny brothers, MorMor specialises in award-winning shawarma and classic shakshuka.
ALS Gongcha
Bubble tea is booming in the UK and this tipple is from Alishan, the most famous tea-growing area in Taiwan. Made by blending a tea base with milk, fruit and fruit juices, then adding the signature “bubbles” - delicious tapioca pearls. The fruit or tea infusions can be served either piping hot or iced cold.
Torito Taco
Another taco place in Liverpool? You have guac to be kidding me. There's always room for more nachos, burritos and quesadillas in our life and these ones are damn good. Founded by a team of like-minded foodies, freshness and creativity are their favourite ingredients. If you're gluten-free, make Torito Taco your first stop at GPO.
The GPO food hall in MetQuarter will be open Sunday to Thursday 8.30am until 11pm, and 8.30am until midnight on Friday and Saturdays, serving alcohol throughout. To book, visit the General Post Office website.
