Huge foodie haven General Post Office plans to open in the Metquarter in the spring
Liverpool shopping centre Metquarter has announced the arrival of a brand new food hall set to open to the public in late spring - covid restrictions allowing.
Located on the Victoria Street entrance of the centre adjoining Everyman, it will be a huge boost for the local area, creating 132 jobs in the city.
We are constantly on the lookout for the next food stars
Experienced food operators The Milestone Group will bring the food hall to Liverpool under its brand ‘General Post Office’ - a nod to the former use of the building as Liverpool’s main Post Office.
Set to be the largest food hall in Liverpool city centre, it says it aims to champion and nurture local indie food operators and showcase a wide range of cuisines. Although at the moment, all the confirmed food providers are from The Milestone Group’s home city of Sheffield and the surrounding areas. We’re sure it will be keen to hear from some Merseyside-based traders too.
So far confirmed for a spot in this massive new food hall are:
Bullion Craft Bean Café - a ‘craft chocolate’ cafe that treats cocoa beans with the same reverence as coffee fanatics treat coffee beans. Expect chocolate-based treats from bars to cookies and single-origin coffee alongside single origin hot chocolate. They even do a fine spirit and chocolate paired tasting.
Restaurant Konjo - This robatayaki kitchen serves pan-Asian food with full-on flavours. Think Korean style boneless chicken thighs in a sticky, sweet and spicy sauce, shiitake mushroom bao with black bean or crispy chilli wagyu beef.
Jail Bird Nashville Fried Chicken - This is hot and spicy chicken inspired by the country capital of the USA, Nashville. This lot keep things simple with their spicy coated and fried chicken served as a burger with ranch dressing, shredded lettuce and waffle fries.
Patty B’s Burgers - These are towering ‘dirty burgers’ with a graphic design nod to Albert Square’s finest Pat Butcher.
Thai 25 - authentic Thai food from green curry to tom yum
Dirty Herb Vegan Chicken - vegan versions of hot dogs and burgers heavily loaded with fries and saucy drizzles.
There will also be a bubble tea cafe.
General Post Office looks like a welcome addition to the Metquarter which has been undergoing a period of rejuvenation. This newest street food spot will hopefully be as successful as similar projects at Duke St, Baltic and the more recent Layers Food and Drink Market on London Rd - while perhaps attracting a slightly different crowd. If you’re heading to the Everyman cinema - when that kind of thing is allowed again - this looks to be a good shout for some pre-film grazing.
Matt Bigland, Founder and Director at The Milestone Group said: “GPO will be a hub for Liverpool’s emerging food hall scene. With a mix of design and culinary excellence, GPO will showcase the best in up-and-coming food and drink talent in the heart of Liverpool City Centre. Independent and totally unique food vendors make up the mix, hand-chosen and incubated to showcase the best in the world food in one iconic venue.”
Looking for talent that aligns with the GPO’s core values is no easy task. We are constantly on the lookout for the next food stars. We help form impressive brands while supporting them in our food hall. If you think your brand is a good fit for GPO or have talent for the next big hit let us know! We want to work with you.”
Another one for the list for when lockdown's lifted.
