Frederiks cocktail is first past the post in citywide contest
A COCKTAIL served on a bed of artificial turf has romped home in this year’s other big Grand National race.
Bartenders from across Liverpool went under starter’s orders at Peacocks, on Seel Street, to create an alcoholic beverage to epitomise the vibe of the big Aintree steeplechase which takes place this weekend.
But in the end it all came down to heels - not hooves - with a winning gin-based drink called Four Miles in Stilettos.
It's a situation, if not a tipple, any disorganised lady racegoer will know, especially this weekend as Merseyrail grinds to a halt in the ongoing RMT dispute, just in time for the big race.
Awng Dao Casey, of Hope Street bar Frederiks, left the rest of the field standing with her creation at the big shake-n-stir-off.
It was hosted by drinks manufacturer and former Grand National sponsor Halewood International and saw 20 of the city’s best mixologists battle it out for first and second place, with the winners receiving a “rare boxed distiller’s cut of Liverpool Gin”.
The brief was to create a races-themed cocktail using Liverpool Gin, Liverpool Vodka or Liverpool Rum.
Runner up was Josh Sage of McGuffie & Co, the bijou Castle Street watering hole, who created another glass of fancy mother’s ruin, called Amberleigh House, 16-1.
Both cocktails are available at their respective bars during Grand National weekend.
Other bars who took part in the competition will also be offering race-themed Liverpool cocktails during the Grand National weekend – these include: NYL Restaurant & Bar at Aloft, Peacocks, The Titanic Hotel and Ex Directory.
Halewood bought the Liverpool Gin brand a year ago from its co-founder, Mark Hensby (who also owns the Liverpool Organic Brewery), for an undisclosed but reportedly eye-watering amount.
