Meat-free restaurant plans to bring ‘health and happiness’ to city centre eating

A new restaurant championing healthy eating and a sustainable planet has opened on Gradwell Street.

Hume has opened on the bustling city centre street, putting its goal of bringing ‘health and happiness’ to Liverpool at the forefront.

Owner Allan Eves set up the restaurant both to champion the benefits of healthy eating for us and the planet, and also in tribute to his late mum who passed away from cancer last year.

This has informed Hume’s focus on ingredients that do good for the body as well as making minimal impact on the planet, with wholefoods used as ingredients and sustainable coffee and alcohol on the menu.

“I’m very excited to introduce Hume to Liverpool and our fantastic menu,” said Allan. “Hume is partly in honour of my mum who sadly passed away in 2024 from cancer. She was an extraordinary person and spent her life in the service of others. I’m hoping I can honour her memory by creating something which will contribute to the health and happiness of the Liverpool community and be in service to the natural world that we all share.

“With Hume, the plan is to create a place for healthy eating and living and myself and the team can’t wait to get started and introduce our philosophy to Liverpool. We also understand that life is about balance and we all like to let our hair down every now and again. As such, our venue will be licensed. Our alcoholic drinks will match our commitment to use the best, minimally processed ingredients - such as serving the best in organic, natural and biodynamic wines and beers.”

Allan has said he and his team want to work collaboratively with organisations and institutions in the city to support healthier living and sustainable practices. This will include reaching out to schools, universities, the NHS, the council and private sector organisations to explore how they can work together to achieve a shared vision of a healthier future.

“Hume is focused on healthy choices and trying to put goodness into our bodies with our fantastic menu, whilst also respecting the sustainability and health of the planet too,” Allan exlpained. “The rise of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, are all heartbreakingly common, and they needn't be. At Hume we’re also working to reduce and eliminate our waste, adopt circular economy principles and actively contribute to the Liverpool City Region Net Zero Pathway and Sustainable Development Goals.”

Hume is open on 16 Gradwell Street from Wednesday to Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
