DAVID Hockney, Anish Kapoor, Yoko Ono, images of Ken Dodd and the The Drawings Pre-Raphaelite Master Edward Burne-Jones head up a busy programme of free shows by National Museums Liverpool for 2013.
New works at the Walker (opens 2 February) will feature paintings, ceramics, sculpture and work on paper by artists including Anish Kapoor, Louise Bourgeois, Yoko Ono, Paula Rego, and Haroon Mirza. The show will consist of contemporary works owned by the gallery, many of which have not been on display before.
In autumn, a major exhibition of early work by David Hockney will run from 11 October to March 2014 at the Walker Art Gallery. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Walker and Arts Council Collection Partnership supported by Christies. It will feature prints, drawings and paintings. Hockney has a long association with the gallery after winning the John Moores Painting Prize in 1967. His winning work ‘Peter getting out of Nick’s pool’ will go on display alongside ‘We Two Boys Together Clinging’ and other works on paper.
Lady Lever Art Gallery hosts The Drawings of Edward Burne-Jones: A Pre-Raphaelite Master which opens on 14 June and will run until January 2014. The exhibition will consist of 26 drawings and watercolours from our collection as well as one painting. It will include both studies and finished pieces as well as large scale full colour designs for stained glass.
Three Friends From Liverpool
The Museum of Liverpool’s newly opened Beryl Bainbridge, painter exhibition runs until 28 April 2013. This unique collection of 15 paintings by Liverpool-born Bainbridge, is displayed together for the first time in her home town.
Later in the year the Museum will also stage Ken Dodd by Stephen Shakeshaft (8 November-2 March 2014).
Ken Dodd By Stephen ShakeshaftStephen Shakeshaft, former picture editor and chief photographer of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, is renowned for his remarkable and varied studies of people. This exhibition chronicles Doddy’s remarkable career. The legendary comedian, 85, remains a household name.
Sudley House presents 20th Century Chic: 100 years of women’s fashion (16 February 2013 until 2014). This will feature 12 evening outfits dating from 1900 to 2000. The costumes highlight changes to women’s role in society during this period and how social changes were reflected in fashion.
World Museum has a new display The Pirate Ship (15 December 2012 to 21 April 2013). The model made for 'The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists' the latest blockbuster produced by Aardman for Sony Pictures Animation, will be moored at the Museum until spring.
In spring World Museum will stage: Telling Tales: Stories from India (24 May -8 September). This exhibition features the Museum’s collection of contemporary Bengali scrolls. The long, vertical, multi-panelled works (known as patas) spent centuries being carted from village to village by the picture makers (patuas) of West Bengal. There will be a story tent in the middle of the exhibition space for storytelling.
There be pirates at the World Museum
At Merseyside Maritime Museum, Titanic and Liverpool: the untold story, which has attracted more than half a million visitors, will continue throughout 2013.
