A COSTA Coffee in Liverpool, is giving away novelty slippers to shoppers who are all trudged out this Christmas.

Costa claims 83 percent of people in the city walk five miles in one shopping trip (and that’s without even going near an IKEA).

Bosses have therefore come up with the festive wheeze of handing out five novelty slipper designs to footsore patrons - choose from Santa Claus, the Penguin, the Snowman, the Elf and the Robin. The footwear will be offered in the Lord Street store, and you can also win a pair of slippers online through the Costa website, if you like.

Costa research says the people of Liverpool make an average of four shopping trips every year and spend £149 each time.

In response to the findings, Caroline Harris, marketing Director UK Retail at Costa, said: “Liverpudlians told us that they are often so focused on finding the perfect gift for their loved ones, that they take no rest breaks during a Christmas shopping trip. So we hope that our Costa Christmas slippers will allow those customers the chance to put their feet up and enjoy a little moment to themselves after a busy day of Christmas shopping.

According to Costa's findings, 52 pc of Liverpudlians said they like a cup of tea or coffee at the end of a busy Christmas shopping trip, preferably in a café. The other 48 percent can be found gargling on stronger stuff in the HMS Liverpool pub.
