THIS year’s biggest newbuild, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, and the recently refurbished and extended Philharmonic Hall are among 17 projects named today for RIBA awards.
Regarded as the architecture oscars, RIBA gongs are prized in the world of planning and building.
RIBA North West revealed the new and exciting projects which will compete for a coveted RIBA North West Award in April.
Over the coming weeks, the RIBA judging panel will be visiting the range of high quality buildings, which made the shortlist, right across the North West: from a private house in Cheshire, by local practice GA Studio, to the arts centre at the heart of one of Manchester’s largest areas of development, HOME by Mecanoo.
As well as the prestigious Building of the Year Award, the shortlist will also produce a Small Project of the Year Award for a project costing less than £500,000. The jury panel will also be on the lookout for Project Architect of the Year, which is awarded to the architect who stands out as having significantly contributed to an award-winning project.
The winners will be announced at an evening event at Liverpool’s Bluecoat on Wednesday April 20.
The RIBA Awards have been running continuously since 1966 and are judged and presented locally. No matter the shape, size, budget or location, RIBA award-winning schemes aim to set the standard for great architecture all across the country.
RIBA awards are for buildings in the UK by RIBA Chartered Architects and International Fellows.

Architecture is big business for Alder Hey designers
BDP, the architecture practice behind Alder Hey, was celebrating its shortlisting in the RIBA awards on the day it was bought by Japanese engineer Nippon Koei.
Nippon Koei is paying £102.2 million for the entire Manchester-based BDP business, which last year had a turnover of £81 million and employs 950 people.
BDP was the master planners behind Liverpool’s biggest redevelopment project, the £1bn Liverpool One.
The firm has six studios in the UK as well as a number dotted overseas including the Netherlands, China and India.
