It's where one week ends and another begins. This is important...
Alright, so summer is approaching, but on the off-chance that we won't be enjoying three straight months of barbecue weather, we thought it a good idea to post five of our favourite Sunday roasts right now... just in case.
Whitelock’s and Turk’s Head
The heritage setting seems to demand you go down the roast route and they are eager to trumpet their suppliers – topside from Pickering’s near Malton, rump of Nidderdale lamb from Agar’s of Ilkley, pork loin from Colin Piercey’s of Easingwold and chicken (served as a half) from Soanes of Middleton-on-the-Wolds. Prices are around £12-£14 for the full works. Whitelock’s Turks Head Yard, Briggate, LS1 6HB. T: 0113 2453950.
The Brunswick
A more minimalist setting but Sunday roasts are sumptuous at this three-year-old bar. Choose between topside of beef for £11, chicken supreme for £10.50 or, our recommendation, an off-menu Beef Wellington to share that you have to order several days in advance. It costs £36 for two and like the simpler roasts is accompanied by a mini Bloody Mary. There’s also a nut roast where you can swap sweet potato mash for the Yorkie. The Brunswick, 82 North Street, Mabgate, LS2 7PN. T: 0113 247 0546.
Reliance
If truth be told, we’d prefer to spend out Sunday afternoons at this stalwart North Street pioneer nibbling on the delights of their home cured charcuterie board, perhaps with a side of purple, sprouting broccoli, feta, za’atar and preserved lemon. Still they make a might mean roast, too. The pick? Probably loin of Gloucester Old Spot Pork, but lamb and beef are both well sourced and the giant Yorkshire pudding and gravy up there with the best. For a side greens with chilli ad hazelnut butter is a welcome change. Nut roasts comes with their own veggie gravy. The Reliance, 76-78 North Street, LS2 7PN. T: 0113 295 6060
Man v Roast
Until March this new carvery cafe, offering full roast meals delivered to your door across the northern suburbs, did so every day except Sunday! That’s all changed now, so order a Sabbath take-out box of your fancy – gammon, lamb, turkey, chicken, beef or pork with all the trimmings at very affordable prices (from £7). Top quality meat is sourced from the estimable Sykes House Farm in Wetherby. Man v Roast, 144 Cardigan Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 1LL.
Home
Expect a deconstructed Sunday lunch at this high-end venture from MasterChef semi-finalist Liz Cottam and Mark Owens, former head chef at the Michelin-starred Box Tree. With prices that are definitely constructed – £60 for five courses with an optional £30 wine flight. The line-up changes each month, which gives you one final April Sunday to work your way through Harewood Asparagus, wild garlic, confit duck yolk, duck-fat crumb; poached cod & sorrel, salmon foam; morel and truffle Wellington, wild mushrooms and sherry and more. Oh yes, and there’s always an unreconstructed Yorkshire pudding course. Home, 16/17 Kirkgate, LS1 6BY. T: 0113 430 0161
