A MINI Commonwealth Games tournament planned for the Pier Head tomorrow (Sat) has been postponed owing to a dodgy weather forecast, according to Liverpool City Council.

“The latest forecast shows there will be heavy rain and blustery conditions at the Pier Head on Saturday afternoon, so rather than risk a complete washout we have decided to postpone the mini Commonwealth Games event until a future date," said a spokesman. "We are sorry for any inconvenience and will let people know when it is rearranged.”

A total of nine sports was set be on offer from 1pm-5pm, in the shadow of the Three Graces, including athletics, hockey, cycling, gymnastics and tennis.

But why?

Well last month Mayor Joe suddenly announced he/the city was thinking of bidding for the Commonwealth Games in 2026, building "on the enthusiasm created by Team GB’s success at the Olympics in Rio".

Anyway, in case you missed it - and it was late in the evening when eyes were perhaps elsewhere - this event was set to serve as a sort of reminder.

What hasn't been postponed, as far as we know, is a full feasibility study into the possibility of staging the games, including an assessment of the city’s infrastructure against the technical requirements as well as a "financial appraisal" looking at all the key factors required to deliver the high-profile event.

In March, Everton fan Mayor Joe pledged a new stadium for his team within the next three years.

A final decision as to whether Liverpool will be nominated as the UK City to bid for the Games will be made in September 2018, with the ultimate decision as to who will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games confirmed in September 2019 by the Commonwealth Games General Assembly.
