Some of Liverpool’s best home grown musicians, including mezzo soprano Danielle Thomas and the bright and beautiful Mersey Wylie will come together for a one-off charity bandstand event at Sefton Park this Saturday (August 15).

The pair will join Creaky Bones and The Choir With No Name, which features singers from Liverpool’s homeless community, on the park’s famous stage on the lake, as part of the annual Bandstand festival to help raise funds for North West Cancer Research – Liverpool’s only locally-based cancer research charity.

Commissioned by Liverpool City Council and co-ordinated by Open Culture, Bandstand got under way in Sefton Park and Stanley Park bandstands last weekend (8 August). Part of the Liverpool International Music Frestival, it goes on until September and each weekend features a different line-up.

This weekend's charity event also includes jazz bands Blowback Horns and Bagga, as well as DJ collective Mixnots, who will open the five hour open air event and, of course, for the traditionally minded picknicker, The Salvation Army wind band.

The event is free to attend and guests can take part in a special butterfly trail around Sefton Park, in honour of NWCR’s logo and symbol of hope, the Holly Blue Butterfly. The butterfly trail will run throughout the day with the fastest time landing the winner with free tickets to next year’s Threshold Festival in the Baltic Triangle. Entry to the competition costs £1.

Headline act Danielle was announced as North West Cancer Research’s first ever ambassador in April this year. The singer was inspired to work with the charity after her grandad sadly died from colorectal cancer aged just 76.

She said: “Losing my grandad to cancer two years ago, really hit home to me how important cancer research is and the hope that it gives to stop others from suffering the way he did."

The North West Cancer Research Bandstand event will start at midday until 5.30pm on Saturday August 15th.
