Historic Duke Street pub returns to its roots

Duke Street's historic pub The Monro is set to reopen next week following a refurbishment.

Opening its doors on Thursday (8 August) the Georgian listed building has been restored to reflect its late 19th century character.

The building, a gastropub for 20 years prior to its sudden closure in October last year, has been restored by The 1936 Pub Company, who have overseen the reopenings of tasteful vintage style pubs such as The White Hart, The Vines and The Green Man.

In a statement the company said: "The 1936 Pub Company are excited to announce the acquisition and the relaunch of the historical Munro pub on Duke St on August 8th. Doors will open at 4pm and all are welcome!

"Prior to its closure a couple of years ago the previous owner had operated the venue as a gastro pub, and had done so successfully for 20 years. We have reworked and refurbished the pub into something we believe is closer in look and feel to its historic presentation as a classic late 19th century pub.

"We feel people who enjoy our vintage era style pubs such as The Red Lion, The White Hart, The Green Man and the award winning restoration of The Vines, will be very pleased with the all new (but old) incarnation of The Munro.

On what visitors can expect from the renovated site, the statement said: "The Munro is set in a late 1700s listed Georgian merchant’s mansion, and the new pub will operate on two floors, and enjoy the all year round benefit of two indoor/ outdoor beer gardens.

"The design team have been scouring the country for all manner of appropriate antiques, bric a brac and ephemera to provide the re-imagined Monro with an authentic period feel.

"As has become a signature in our venues, an extensive range of cask ales and stouts will be available, along with our legendary hot and cold pies and bar snacks. "
