A garden oasis in the city centre, and some of the best small plates in Liverpool
A peaceful haven off busy Hope Street, Pen Factory feels like an escape from the city…despite being right in the centre of Liverpool. Not only that, it’s right next to Everyman Theatre and just three minutes’ walk from the Philharmonic Hall.
Needless to say, the location’s ideal - whether you’re off to see a show, popping in for a working lunch or meeting up with friends. Good weather? They also have a lovely garden oasis, perfect for sitting out in the sun.
Culinary entrepreneur Paddy Byrne and award-winning chef Tom Gill, formerly of the Everyman Bistro, have summer dining well and truly covered too. Think fresh salads, seasonal specials and small plates that are ideal for sharing (between Tuesday and Friday, 12-4pm, you can get two selected plates for £10 - bargain).
Veggie options include Spanish chip butty and za’atar fried halloumi with harrissa yoghurt, while fish dishes span glazed smoked haddock fillet omelette to Bandari monkfish tail with Sharazi salad. After something meatier? Think duck ragout with orzo and lamb scrumpets with tartare sauce. There’s plenty more where they came from - as well as soups, snacks and veggie sharing boards.
Produce is local where possible, and the menu counts BBC Good Food Guide and Hardens as fans. It’s available throughout the day and into the evening.
As for drinks, Pen Factory’s top-notch list of cask ales and continental lagers earned a mention in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. You’ll also find a great list of wine, spirits and seasonal cocktails. Can’t see a concoction you fancy? Ask the talented bar team and they’ll endeavour to make it.
