First up on Saturday 7 August it’s Baiana, a Liverpool based trio bringing the music and charm of Brazilian jazz and pop to Ma’s. Baiana’s live performances celebrate the music of Brazil with a treasure chest of classic Bossa Novas, seductive sambas and Latin inspired arrangements of other well-known standards.

Blind Monk Duo perform on Saturday 14 August, segueing across Black Sabbath, Stranglers and Coltrane to create hard and fast sax and bass.

The following weekend, the Dean Masser Duo will take to the stage. One of the North West's most acclaimed saxophonists, Dean Masser is a former member of the Jack Parnell Quartet, who recorded a live album during a week-long stint at Ronnie Scott’s. Since then, Dean has played alongside many of the leading names in British jazz.

The August line-up is completed by a bank holiday special on Saturday 28 August with Neil Yates (pictured top.) Multi-instrumentalist composer, arranger and educator, Neil worked initially for the BBC Big Band and Johnny Dankworth Orchestra and as a high profile session musician performed and recorded with the Brand New Heavies, Black Grape, Lighthouse Family, Alison Moyet and Robbie Williams.

Coming up in September is Modjango, a father and son guitar duo from the Wirral, playing jazz Manouche in the style of the great Django Reinhardt. Taking influences not only from Django, but also from modern-day jazz guitarists, Modjango applies Spanish style to a hot-club swing.

Renowned saxophonist, clarinetist and arranger Frank Griffith performs at Ma Boyle’s on Saturday 25 September. Frank developed his distinctive New York jazz sound living and performing in the city for over 20 years. Counting Joe Henderson, Lester Young, Duke Ellington and Burt Bacharach as some of his main influences, Frank plays many forms of jazz including modern, mainstream and traditional alongside funk and soul.

The return of Jazz Saturdays to Ma Boyle’s is a special moment, with live music finally back at the historic venue which hit its 150th anniversary in 2020. The alehouse and eatery dates back to 1870, originating as a coffee shop, later an oyster bar, and now as a historic pub in the iconic Tower Building next to St Nick’s Church.

Owner Iain Hoskins opened Ma Boyle's sister venue, Tempest on Tithebarn in June. With a heavy nod to New York’s meatpacking district eateries, focusing heavily on brunches, lunches, cocktails and craft beer, the site features a ground-floor bar and restaurant, a basement club and a stunning open-air roof top looking out across the city.

Tempest on Tithebarn hosts its own ParrJazz event on Friday 26 November in the venue’s subterranean club, Kol Box. Headlining is Julian Costello, a London-based musician, composer and teacher whose Julian Costello Quartet embraces energetic and melodic performances with humour.

The quartet features renowned musicians Maciek Pysz on guitar; Yuri Goloubev, Jakub Cywinski and Michele Tacchi on bass; and Adam Teixeira plus Eric Ford on drums and percussion. They have played in London to sell-out crowds, toured England, and, with support from The Arts Council, toured France, Poland, Germany and Belgium.
