Let the good times roll with Liverpool Disco Festival DJs and more
Welcome to the Rollerdrome. No, Little Mix aren’t doing a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood (although who wouldn’t be excited to see that happen?) Invisible Wind Factory’s brand new roller skating rink is now open.
After a year or more away, we want to offer people the ultimate dance floor to return to
The Rollerdrome combines the burgeoning craze of roller skating with DJs playing boss tunes, all distilled through the unique and visionary way that IWF approach all of their events. The theme is interplanetary disco; we'd expect nothing less from the team that gave us “Captain Kronos” and his adventures, a time travelling hero that commandeered The Kazimer and IWF for some of the most brilliantly eccentric parties in the history of the galaxy.
TikTok trend
Roller skating has had a resurgence in lockdown, but whether your cultural reference point is Xanadu, Starlight Express, Boogie Nights, Whip It or just TikTok, the Rollerdrome has something for you. Skaters of all abilities are welcome, from beginners to advanced, and across a varied programme during the week.
Invisible Wind Factory said: “We’ve taken this opportunity to link fitness and sport activities with an immersive audio visual experience, and we’re really excited about turning fitness on its head to create something genuinely experimental and unseen before.
“We will continue to host world-class live music and club nights, working with local and national promoters but with more on offer during the daytimes. After a year or more away, we want to offer people the ultimate dance floor to return to.”
Roller Birds take the floor
Wednesdays at the Rollerdrome is all about getting started and is suitable for beginners of all ages. Sessions will be hosted by the coaches from Liverpool Roller Birds, Liverpool’s own roller derby team. They will teach the key fundamentals such as proper skating posture, balance, skating, falling safely, stopping and more.
One of the headline collaborations is with Liverpool Disco Festival, who will host a range of events featuring international DJs and live acts under their own banner, “United Skates”, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Guests and events already confirmed include Mafalda, Mr. Thing, Jimpster, an “End of Term session” on 4 - 5 June with LDF X Soul Jam, SecretSundaze and a We Out Here festival takeover with Rebecca Vasmant (World Wide FM), Rich Medina, Jovonn and DJ Spen.
Disco fever for United Skates
Liverpool Disco Festival said: “We are stoked to finally launch our new ‘United Skates’ concept. Skating parties at our festival events have always proven super popular and now the plan is to take things up to the next level and deliver these regular sessions, uniting people via skating.
“As with all our events quality music, artists and musical community approach will be at the heart of the programming and we will be delving deep into the roots of skate culture to deliver an authentic experience merged with contemporary high-level production at The Invisible Wind Factory. Their unbeatable otherworldly immersive magic will no doubt help make this something very special indeed.”
Watch out for the Windy Rollers
IWF Sunday Skate Sessions is the regular family friendly all dayer for families and groups of friends to come and skate, eat, drink and enjoy good music. The bank holiday Sunday programme, curated by the in-house Windy Rollers troop, will include sets from Twindependent Women, sneakBeats, Buddha and Jacques Malchance. Other takeovers in June include local collectives Lime and Melodic Distraction, with further collaborations to be confirmed, including Africa Oye, Stealing Sheep DJs and more.
Rollerdrome events will offer street food from Invisiburger, plus a bar service with cocktails, soft drinks and more. Safety of visitors is paramount to IWF and stringent plans are in place to ensure a safe and COVID-secure experience for all visitors.
