A LIVERPOOL retailer has revealed "the city’s top 10 sweets", which puts old favourite, Rhubarb and custard at Number One.
The city centre shop, which stocks more than 600 varieties of confectionery, has sold more than 23 tonnes of sweets since opening in August 2012, including more than 48,000 sweet bags and 12,000 jars of Victorian variety jars.
As well as traditional treats, the shop is is also noticing a growing trend for American ‘candy’ which is specially imported every week. Among the US challengers to the more traditional British sweets, such as Sherbet Lemons and Cinder Toffee are Milk Duds, Nerds and Peanut M&M’s - which alone sell more than 1,200 packets every week!

The sweet shop manager said: “Because we sell such a huge range of sweets, from traditional to brand new, we have a very diverse customer base. It’s great to see different generations coming into the store and evoking childhood memories – or discovering new treats."
“Nostalgia has a big part to play and the traditional sweet really has a strong hold in Liverpool illustrated by the fact we’ve sold almost a tonne of Rhubarb & Custard sweets!
"The popularity of the American confectionery is massive however, as our customers have embraced the opportunity to get their hands on items they previously would’ve had to go on holiday to discover. We sell 1500 cans of Vanilla Coca Cola every week so perhaps an American sweet will top the list next year!” concluded the man whose shop is in town.
