The Climbing Hangar has been part designed by a GB pro-climber
Award winning regeneration company Urban Splash has welcomed a new health, fitness and coffee house to South Liverpool as The Climbing Hangar opens at the Matchworks business estate.
In line with government guidance, The Climbing Hangar opened for the first time last weekend, making its climbing wall available to the public via pre-booked sessions. The centre is available to adults and children aged seven and above, and a brand new coffee house will be open to guests with social distancing measures in place.
Ged Macdomhnaill, CEO of The Climbing Hangar, which has another venue in Liverpool (although Sandhills is currently closed for refurbishment), as well as in Plymouth, London and Swansea said: “We secured planning permission for our Matchworks site at the start of the year, so we have been waiting very patiently to open our doors.
“I’m delighted the time has finally come, and that we are in a position to safely welcome people into our space, following government guidelines and putting additional health and safety measures in place to protect everyone in our space.”
Features of the new centre include a training board and the visually stunning climbing wall featuring a wide variety of climbs for both novice and hardcore climbers. Several of the climbs were designed by Team GB’s pro climber Shauna Coxsey.
Ged continued, “We worked alongside the Matchworks architect team at shedkm to execute a vision for a new, high spec, health and fitness facility; the result is something pretty special here and we’re looking forward to showing everyone what’s on offer.
Nicky Harries of Urban Splash added, “The Matchworks is a diverse place, home to a rich array of businesses – with The Climbing Hangar extending that mix. It is a place which transcends the 9 to 5; there’s our gym, outside space for plenty of walks and outside leisure areas to play table tennis – there’s so much more here than workspace.
“The Climbing Hangar is going to be a brilliant place for our occupiers and visitors to the area to enjoy a fun fitness activity, as well as offering a new coffee house. With social distancing and hygiene guidelines respected, it will be a brilliant hub for the community.”
The Matchworks is an art deco icon on Speke Boulevard which was transformed by Urban Splash into a contemporary business estate, filled with workspaces, studios and light industrial units. It’s currently home to a diverse mix of businesses. In addition to The Climbing Hangar, Urban Splash has also completed a deal with incumbent tenant Global Beauty Products Limited this month; the company will expanded into a 6,049 sq workspace in the building.
The Urban Splash portfolio consists of workspaces in communities across the country; director Emily Handslip concluded: “Matchworks like many of our commercial neighborhoods is much more than a traditional commercial setting. Our communities have long been places rich in outdoor space, with amenities which promote health and wellbeing – something hugely beneficial in the current Covid climate.”
