Eat for victory
IF the poor weather is getting you down, comfort eat (and drink) the weekend away with local produce and heaps of it.
Highlights of this year’s Southport Food and Drink Festival include the usual impressive chef demonstrations in the Live Cookery Theatre, with appearances from Alex MacKay and Southport's own Masterchef 2012 finalist Jay Tinker.
New features include the Children's Food & Drink Festival, the Southport Bake Off for those wildly enthusiastic about pastry, Community Bake Sale, real ale festival and even a chocolate festival.
There's also a much wider range of regional produce and street food available to sample and purchase thank in previous years, and to top it all off, entry is still completely free! Parking is also now available onsite adjacent to the event.

Cunning stunts
You don't have to be loopy to become a top kite flyer, but it helps.
It's looking a bit blowy out there. Weather permitting, we assume, the Wirral Kite Festival returns to The Dips in New Brighton featuring top kite flyers from across the UK.
Artistic kites, giant inflatable kites, sports kites and power kites.
There will also be a kite-making workshop for all those have-a-go fliers, and the money raised will be donated to Vision4Children. There is also a children's funfair, trade stands and food stalls. So, a high-flying day all in all. You see what we did there…

When the Telegraph describes something having humour that is rarely simple and often dark, but still leaving the viewer physically helpless with hilarity, it should be worth your time. Yes?
Alan Aykbourne's comic trilogy is set over one weekend at a rundown country house, where familial tensions and thwarted lust are played out through three different viewpoints. Three viewpoints mean there are three different plays. How clever is that?
You can enjoy Table Manners, Living Together and Round and Round the Garden, the three plays individually, or see all three as a special theatrical event on one of the Trilogy Days in the Playhouse. It's a go, go, go.

Just saying no
To kick off a rolling series of pickets and occupations against workfare, leading up to the National Week of Action on 7-14 July, The Liverpool Solidarity Federation is holding a day of action in Liverpool city centre.
They are calling on everyone who stands opposed to the Government's workfare scheme, and what they say is the attempt to undermine the rights and conditions of ALL workers, to join them at the Next to Nowhere social centre from 12.30pm. There, they will announce their target and take action.
We do like a surprise, but have a feeling somebody else in town probably won't like this one.
They say the message to every workfare provider in Liverpool is simple: If You Exploit Us, We Will Shut You Down!
